“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God; so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin, and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel wrapped around His waist.”
John 13:3-5
What are you doing?
That is often my reaction when someone is trying to do something kind for me. I can only imagine how the disciples felt when their leader got down on his knees and began to wash the dirt and grime from their feet which had accumulated during the day. Confusion, shock, and a myriad of other emotions came out.
But for me, the feelings that initially are felt often give way to a simple and deep sense of gratitude, as I experience the feeling of love shown in a very deliberate way.
That night before His death, Jesus wanted to show His followers that Godly love is not this extravagant action with symphony orchestras, but a simple act that shows respect and care for the person as a whole in a kind and intimate way.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to witness this type of love on the street in Atlantic City. A needy, likely homeless man came by and accepted a few clothing items and a pair of boots we had to give away. He told his story and showed his gratitude to God for the blessing. Then he went across the street to organize and put on the boots. A young State Trooper was nearby and helped him pack the clothes and lace boots as he put them on. God’s Real Presence was there and my heart is still touched by the moment.
What are you doing?
2000 years later this question is still being asked. But now we have the answer:
“Love God, love each other. Show the love for both God and man by caring for each other.”
That’s what Jesus showed by what He did that night.
